In this session, we are going to cover multiple aspects of being a female on the job. We will be covering a wide array of things women may encounter on the job as well as just being a female on the job. Our main focuses are being more efficient throwing a ladder or doing a rescue drag/carry, going over how policy in a department is important to your overall success and what to look for, requesting for gear that fits you appropriately, and answering all questions there are. We are going to open the floor for Q&A at the end of our session. This session is open to both male and female. It is intended to educate and facilitate having women in departments.

The OFA brings live fire into the classroom and demonstrate the destructive force and power fire has utilizing the OFA’s mobile flashover trailer. A lack of understanding fire behavior can lead to inaccurate Fire Behavior Lab predictions, the destruction of property and the loss of life. All students must possess a current certificate to practice as a firefighter issued under O.R.C. § 4765.55. Turnout gear, SCBA and spare SCBA bottle is required.

An incident's strategic goals and tactical objectives do not entirely change because the incident occurs in the rural countryside instead of the big city! What does change is the available staffing to accomplish these goals/objectives, the notification times of/response times to the incident, the water supply for fires, and many other variables that may or may not be within our control. We do not get a “do-over” or a “reset button” because we were not ready to perform. This class will examine the factors that commonly impact rural emergency response and proven strategies to mitigate these factors to achieve tactical success. This should be a must-attend for any firefighter or fire officer who regularly operates in or responds to rural environments where resources are not just limited but often scarce!

This course outlines the skills necessary to recognize the severity of incidents involving rolling stock used in rail surface transportation, contact the proper personnel with the railroads, and work seamlessly with the private sector employees and contractors that may be dispatched. These skills will be generated via education on railroad personnel, proper safety procedures for working on and around railroad property, an overview of the different types of rolling stock and the risks associated with them, the various markings and reference materials necessary to ascertain the contents of a rail car, and general overview of the different types of damage commonly incurred during a derailment. The comprehension of these subjects will allow the participant to rapidly analyze the severity of an incident and notify the appropriate people so that any specialized equipment can be dispatched as quickly as possible.

IMPORTANT-A FEMA Student Identification number (SID) is required to register and receive credit for this DHS/FEMA-funded course. Life happens. Not just work but our lives outside of work can cause stress, anxiety, and issues that we must deal with to be healthy and happy. Often, our own self-care takes a backseat to taking care of others, completing our work responsibilities, and just making it through the day. This course reminds us that to take care of others, we must first, take care of ourselves. The various possible physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, and behavioral effects are discussed. Techniques and strategies for dealing with these effects in a healthy and safe way are discussed. Concepts and techniques for family and friends are also covered. Lastly, resources are provided for additional assistance. The Five Pillars of wellness are described and applied to First Responders.

Image interpretation is one of the most critical skills a firefighter needs to develop to successfully use a Thermal Imaging Camera (TIC). Firefighters need to be able to glance at the TIC display and understand the image being shown. This is a learned skill that comes with understanding the technology of thermal imaging coupled with practical experience in the field. The program is structured to impart essential knowledge about modern vehicle construction and the behavior of metals during accidents to rescuers. Grasping these concepts is vital for reducing the time needed for extrication and enhancing the chances of survival for those involved. It covers both elementary and sophisticated techniques associated with the use of extrication tools, as well as an understanding of vehicle safety systems and their construction.

Identifying and Describing Tools and Equipment: -Recognizing the levels of rescue vehicles (e.g., light rescue vehicles). -Identifying common tools and equipment carried on rescue vehicles.
Scene Safety and Stabilization: -Establishing scene safety zones. -Stabilizing vehicles. -Isolating potentially harmful energy sources -Determining access and egress points. -Creating openings for rescue.
Patient Extraction: -Disentangling victims. -Removing packaged victims to designated safe areas. -Terminating vehicle incidents.!

PPE will be required for portions of this class.

The All-Hazards Training Center at The University of Findlay has developed the Rail Car Incident Response for Crude, Ethanol, and Other Flammable Liquids training course for the U.S. Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (DOT PHMSA) to educate emergency responders on freight rail car incidents involving hazardous materials, specifically crude oil, ethanol, and other flammable liquids. As more and more rail traffic transports cargo, including hazardous materials, it is important that the responder community become educated about the dangers and unique hazards presented with rail cars carrying these commodities. The information covered in this training course will enhance the ability of emergency responders to assess the scene of a rail car incident, understand the resources needed to remediate the emergency situation, including how the railroad will play a critical role in the response.
